One of my most favorite books of all times is titled Finding your strength in difficult times by David Viscott, and I found this book at home about 5 years back, and boy am I glad I did.
Now don’t let the title fool you, it has very little to do with “difficult times”, instead it is a collection of very simple thoughts on various every day subjects which can act as a guide to better oneself as a human being. And since the first time I read it, I’ve been taken with this precious little book (its actually tiny <3). I read this book when I feel like I’m slipping from the standard of grace that I hold for myself. Often using the wisdom from this book in various instances in life, especially when I am encountered with contentious people. Quoting from it to loved ones, or even recommending it to a lot of friends. I even went so far as to buy a few copied and gift it to really close friends. That’s how much I love this book.
This style of writing appeals to me most, simply because it is simple and crisp, it doesn’t drone on and on about the same concept, it makes its point and moves on to the next. On average each chapter is about one and a half pages, so by the end of each chapter I found myself in a state of wonder that this author had nailed it with beautifully articulated thoughts.
It also acts as a constant reminder to me not to get carried away by the surface, not to judge a book by its cover (works literally also), and before writing something off, to actually take a step back and look at the bigger picture. The take away from this book in terms of the chapters itself is way more. But I’d rather you read this book and see for yourself.
